The Writers Strike and the Canadian Production Chain
The 2023 writers strike was an American labour dispute, but its effects moved through Canadian crews, vendors, locations and service-production schedules.
The stoppage reached beyond the writers room.
The Writers Guild of America strike began on May 2, 2023 and ended for return-to-work purposes on September 27, 2023. The central issues were American, but the production economy is not contained by the border.
Canadian service work often depends on U.S. studios, streamers, agencies and production companies having scripts, approvals and greenlights in motion. When that pipeline pauses, local crews may feel the slowdown even if they are not part of the bargaining unit.
For Canada, resilience means staying ready.
The Okanagan cannot replace Los Angeles, Vancouver or Toronto, and it should not pretend to. The opportunity is different: be a credible regional layer when productions are ready to move, and stay practical while the larger market resets.
That means maintaining local knowledge, crew relationships, gear access, location intelligence and delivery discipline so that when projects come back, the region is not starting from zero.
