A 2023 Los Angeles Trip Through RED, Paramount and the Camera Ecosystem

The 2023 Los Angeles trip was not a conference run, and it should not be dressed up as one. Its value was more practical: see the camera, studio and film-culture ecosystem up close, then bring that context back into the early KFS plan.

The honest frame is mixed-purpose.

This trip was partly personal and partly industry-facing, so the post only works if it stays honest. It was not a formal conference, and it was not a clean sales roadshow. It was an early Los Angeles field note from the period when KFS was still learning what kind of production infrastructure, vendor access and industry vocabulary would matter back in Kelowna.

That does not make it useless. A regional production company has to understand the larger markets it wants to connect with. Los Angeles is dense with camera companies, studio lots, repair shops, screening culture and people who treat film as a daily operating system. Seeing that density in person helped sharpen what KFS could realistically build and what it would always need to source through partners.

The RED visit is the business anchor of this trip: camera workflow, vendor language and the kind of technical confidence KFS needed to keep building.

This was not a tourist stop. It was listening, handling gear and understanding how camera ecosystems are supported in a larger production market.

Paramount added studio-lot context: stages, history, physical production density and the difference between a facility story and a production ecosystem.

The film-culture pieces mattered too, but only as context. They helped connect audience culture, repertory cinema and production ambition back to the KFS lens.

RED was the business anchor.

The strongest KFS thread was the RED visit. Getting close to the camera ecosystem, the KOMODO-X conversation, monitoring, media, power, lenses and support gear made the trip feel materially connected to production rather than just film tourism.

The lesson was practical. Better camera ownership is only one piece of the value. Producers care about reliability, prep, troubleshooting, batteries, media, monitoring, accessories, repair pathways and whether the person bringing the camera can make the day easier. That is the kind of knowledge a small regional company has to build if it wants larger productions to trust it.

Paramount and the film-culture stops added context.

Paramount added a different kind of clarity. The tour was not a sales meeting, but it made the physical studio story more concrete: stages, backlot logic, lot history, production density and the way a place becomes legible to the people who work inside it.

Secret Movie Club and Samy's Camera sat on the same map for a reason. One side was audience and film culture; the other was the camera and repair ecosystem. Together, they showed how much support surrounds the actual shoot in a mature production city.

The takeaway came back to Kelowna.

The point was never that Kelowna should pretend to be Los Angeles. The takeaway was the opposite: KFS needed to know where the Okanagan could be strong, where it needed Vancouver or LA-scale support, and how to talk about regional production without overselling the local market.

Looking back, this trip belongs on KFS as an early outreach and infrastructure-learning note. It helped connect the studio-era ambition to a more durable service-production idea: know the gear, know the partners, know the gaps, and make Kelowna easier for outside producers to understand.
