The Role of Color Grading in Commercial Production

Colour grading is not where a commercial suddenly becomes professional. It is where decisions made in prep, lighting, exposure, wardrobe, art direction and monitoring are brought into one consistent finish.

Image consistency starts on set. The grade has a much better job when exposure, contrast and colour are watched before the footage reaches post.

A good grade supports the message instead of calling attention to itself. Skin tone, product colour, brand palette, contrast, black levels and shot-to-shot matching all have to survive the edit, cutdowns and delivery versions.

That is why colour should be part of the production conversation early. The final grade can refine the image, but it should not be asked to rescue avoidable problems from the shooting day.
